Seriously...it's what's on my mind...and in my heart and home right now. I don't know if it's possible for me to be more thankful!
I'm not talking about a giddy excitement or loud laughter or a nice "cushion" in the bank. In fact, our home is often full of grumbling, fighting between siblings (remember we have four - ranging in age from 13 - 20) and our bank account balance is low enough to make some people seriously scared - especially this time of year. I can look into any room in my house and see things that need to be picked up, organized, and cleaned. My "to-do" list is never-ending (like many of yours, I'm sure!) The Christmas busy-ness surrounds me. However, I'm experiencing a life full of contentment and a grateful heart - a life full of hope.
I have personally struggled with depression for years. I also take medication to help with it. Life can still be awful. I know what it's like to be overwhelmed, to not know what to do, to feel alone. My husband and I have watched two of our daughters struggle with depression and anxiety over the past several years. We've cried, fought, prayed, researched, asked others for help, prayed, and done just about every other thing we could do to help protect them and teach them how to believe in themselves and seek help when they need it. Oh...did I mention that we've prayed? :) For so long we've been praying for our children. Praying that they will know how much God loves them, praying that they will love Him in return, and praying that they will live full, healthy, productive lives.
Lately, we've begun to see glimpses of these prayers being answered. The result? JOY - a heart that is grateful beyond words and filled with more hope than ever before, along with a deeper faith in God and His incredible love for us. Having experienced both incredible blessings and very trying times, I can tell you without a doubt that there is hope. There is peace. There is JOY! In the past when I've experienced "mountain top" times in my life they were always fairly short-lived. I kind of faced them with a doubting attitude (knowing they wouldn't last). This time, I'm savoring the moments. I'm relishing each smile on my children's faces, every moment of happiness, every smile. I know life can change in an instant. For now, I just want to hold on and be thankful.
For those of you who may be struggling right now, please know that I care - deeply! If you want to talk with someone, go out for coffee, or just have someone pray with you, please let me know. I'm here...and wishing for you this same (and even greater!) JOY.Kathy Loganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05249256029651242176noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3886128175658535944.post-43712206799140540172014-10-07T10:44:00.001-07:002014-10-07T10:47:18.991-07:00For a new neighbor...Do people still give "welcome to the neighborhood" gifts, food, anything? I made this card for a family who recently moved in (just two houses down the street), and will probably make a fresh batch of cookies to go with it...or maybe some pumpkin scones...mmMmmMMmm...yummy!
Wow. LONG time no blogging! Life is busy with four kids and for 2 1/2 of the past three years I was working full time (which meant not much crafting.) I'm back at it now (at least occasionally), and yesterday I made time to just play. SO much fun.
If you looked at my craft area right now, you'd see all sorts of these flowers stamped and cut out just waiting to be placed on different projects. :-) Here's a few more of the cards I created with this set...
I made three cards with it...all with the same layout, but slightly different color schemes. I stamped the main image with StazOn ink, then colored with my favorite aqua-painter and ink pads. I played with one of my new toys (a Martha Stewart border punch) on this project, as well. Which one is your favorite? I posted a close-up of mine...
Our oldest daughter has been struggling with depression for some time now, and in April spent eight days in a psychiatric hospital, followed by three more as a "partial patient" in an attempt to diagnose, treat, and teach her how to better manage the emotions she's dealing with. On top of that, we had three birthdays to celebrate (and Easter, too)! How do you celebrate when your life is in the midst of a storm? Carefully. I'm definitely not an expert at this, but I'm learning to recognize the truly important, and focus on one day at a time (sometimes one minute or hour at a time).
We all deal with life's ups and downs differently. I eat...and craft...and cry (in no particular order). Crafting is one of the few "positive outlets" that I have, so I refuse to let that go completely. A few of the cards I've made recently were for family, so I thought I'd share them here.
The turquoise card uses Stampin' Up!'s "Natural Beauty" set, and I simply watercolored the bird image a bit. The flower strip was made using an EK punch.

The birthday card was made for Brenna's birthday (I still have a hard time believing that she's actually 17!). I used the Vintage Vogue set from Stampin' Up!, along with a Nestabilities die, and some vanilla seam binding. This is one of my personal favorites. :-)Kathy Loganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05249256029651242176noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3886128175658535944.post-31985492384484015482011-03-30T14:34:00.000-07:002011-03-30T14:34:44.560-07:004-Drawer Easel CardWhen my friend Jennie made and posted her gorgeous 4-drawer easel card on her blog recently (http://inkypuddles.blogspot.com/2011/03/4-drawer-easel-card.html?spref=fb) I knew that I wanted to make one. Most of the projects I create are definitely on the feminine side, so I tried to make one that was more masculine for our son, Cody. You know the movie where the theme is to "Pay it Forward"? Well, there's also a group that likes to "Craft it Forward" by sending handmade items to others simply as an act of kindness. I recently participated in a round, and ended up sending five different people five cards each. Some of them I've already posted here before (like my spring card with the Spell-binders die and the butterfly), but I also made a couple of new ones. Fairly simple, but fun! The card with the jungle animals is a "Waterfall Card".
In fact, I have a LOT of hand-made cards ready to send out at a moment's notice. Still...I'm not good at sending cards in a timely fashion, and I still like to create new cards for certain events. My kids' birthdays are a great example. :-) Since our youngest recently turned 10, I made these fun owl cards for her invitations. Her actual birthday card was just like them, but without the "Party this Way" element on the front. The owls were made entirely with punches, and the scalloped circle is a Spell-binders die.

My friend Tessa was our demonstrator, and brought supplies for each of us to create three cards. Spending time with friends and stamping = a perfect day in my book! I see it as a day to celebrate and connect with those you love (and not just a "Hallmark holiday".) This doesn't mean you need to spend a ton of money, either. At our house, I got up early (very rare!), and fixed my family a hot breakfast of bacon, heart-shaped pancakes, and eggs. Now, this might seem normal to you, but with 5 different people all leaving the house at 4 different times, this can be a challenge. My family loved it! Later in the day I made these cute boxes (instructions can be found at http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/resources/tutorials/allinonebox/ ) and filled them with Hershey's Hugs and Kisses. They were a huge hit! Tom gave me a beautiful pink rose and a card that he created himself - absolutely made me smile! I hope you and your family had a great day - no matter how you chose to spend it!Kathy Loganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05249256029651242176noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3886128175658535944.post-63541258684779487912010-11-20T18:32:00.000-08:002010-11-20T18:48:08.111-08:00Cinnamon Rolls - Oh So Yummy!!!Ok...all of you who know me know that I LOVE to eat! Right up there on that list of things I love to do is to bake, and (of course!) the two go hand in hand. :-) Here's a recipe I tried recently that turned out SOOOOO good! Well worth the effort!

"Cinnabon Cinnamon Rolls" - taken from Todd Wilbur's More Top Secret Recipes.

Rolls:
1 (1/4 oz.) package dry yeast
1 cup warm milk
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup margarine (I used butter)
1 t. salt
2 eggs
4 cups flour (I used 3 cups white and 1 cup whole wheat)

Filling:
1 cup packed brown sugar
2 1/2 T. cinnamon
1/3 cup margarine, softened (again...I used butter)

Icing:
8 T. margarine (yep - I used butter)
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup cream cheese
1/2 t. vanilla
1/8 t. salt

For the rolls, dissolve the yeast in the warm milk in a large bowl. Add the sugar, butter, salt, eggs, and flour; mix well. Knead the dough into a large ball, using your hands dusted lightly with flour. Put in a bowl, cover and let rise in a warm place about 1 hour or until the dough has doubled in size. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface, until it is approximately 21" long by 16" wide (it should be approximately 1/4" thick.) Preheat oven to 400.
To make filling, combine the brown sugar and cinnamon in a bowl. Spread the softened butter over the surface of the dough, and then sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon evenly ever the surface. Working carefully, from the long edge, roll the dough down to the bottom edge. Cut the dough into large, even slices (about 1 3/4" each), and place in a lightly greased baking pan. Bake for 10 minutes or until light golden brown.
While the rolls are baking, combine the icing ingredients. Beat well with an electric mixer until fluffy. When the rolls are done, spread generously with icing.Kathy Loganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05249256029651242176noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3886128175658535944.post-15856370206652007152010-11-20T18:24:00.000-08:002010-11-20T18:31:58.588-08:00Give Thanks card...<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 237px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx_mLt-WIdhqDRSLtO3ZnL3iDPNLUuCPOlVFG9wKAJRX-ODO4zms1SJmUE8D2Gm3cpV1rda-UVGZT5MsVVeKeMl_uEoSPKx4WZ1nDKZaMjhWSxRxuIaFO3etLgfa88ag0ceA65LDbmY4EW/s320/Give+Thanks.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5541825039788996290" />
Ok...so I've managed to squeeze in a little stamping time recently, and this is the result. Oh well... Lately, my "craft time" has been consumed by painting our family room (I might post pictures later, if I actually get around to it). Yesterday, though, I crafted in my kitchen by trying out three new recipes. I made Caramel Apple Cupcakes (recipe found in the Oct. 2010 issue of Everyday with Rachael Ray magazine), then Apple-Crisp Orange Pound Cake and Apple-Topped Cheesecake with Caramel Topping (both found in the Fall Baking/Betty Crocker booklet that I bought as an impulse while waiting in line at the grocery store). We haven't tried the cheesecake yet, but the other two recipes are FANTASTIC! If you like to bake...give these recipes a try - they're yummy and perfect for this time of year.Kathy Loganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05249256029651242176noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3886128175658535944.post-81085704905293096392010-09-10T16:55:00.000-07:002010-09-10T17:04:32.493-07:00Build-a-Bear teacher thank you cards...<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 250px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9W7nyvST9-XkVx_6TW3vikahSdOvgkBQUFwK2w2YuuL0NYjPuj5kwMCM0jnbU_vw7T8yYPi1uJ04rSMoAzIjiQ3MVdqT_hA9jp-wQtnQ-yXdHGFadTFmBY_-F0jpYtDKlsPtM5HmqOVII/s320/BAB+thanks.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5515438473671671618" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 246px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXJMsfR6d1fuslN1q_-LyXiTtx3TfGxKp2UAYcyboX7N34hhp7drDSaEmdmLmPqHc0_Dp7FBwRZJRKZo0ciRbWCk5RXxGgphOPfy55oCg3R0D2bwsszB9QXFOpxBDKr_PUlJzauDAgdkvH/s320/BAB+thanks+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5515438458328666962" />
Now that all four of my kiddos are back in school full-time (and I'm not home-schooling any of them this year), I'm hoping to post more cards and projects here. In fact, when I made the Advent calendar this year, they said, "but we're still going to do the candy count-downs, right?" LOL Basically, I use a long piece of plastic wrap, cut it in half lengthwise, and place the pieces of candy along it (each child chooses their favorite type of candy for this). Then I "roll" the plastic wrap around the candy like a long tube, tie small bits of ribbon in between each piece of candy, and attach a decorative top. They get to remove and enjoy one piece of candy per day up until Christmas!Kathy Loganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05249256029651242176noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3886128175658535944.post-18499444687191774382009-12-22T22:31:00.000-08:002009-12-22T22:33:39.863-08:00Build-a-Bear cards for MOPS kids...<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 227px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhENorZ-xVLQpjC0Q-fA5Z6e9gLP4n6TwVFnF1w1ih6B3mLQtkqrBfJnJAcJwDvFun3TmNFuRgMPIS0KpeBuwgUbOybweZKvKsJMwvD7QlPu5v-LnInw85ui_GER96vyWzNIDQxGdn_Y6cw/s320/12-13-09+133.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5418316012097245378" />
As the Moppet Coordinator for our church (basically the person in charge of childcare for our Mothers of Pre-Schoolers group), I made a bunch of these cards recently.
